Cybersecurity Policy for South Africa

On the 19th of February 2010, the Department of Communications issued a Notice of Intention to produce a Cybersecurity Policy for South Africa. Included in the objectives of the Policy is: (i) the establishment of institutional advisory structures; (ii) the promotion of confidence and trust in the use of ICTs through improved cybersecurity; and (iii) the promotion of compliance with appropriate technical and operational cybersecurity standards.

Notwithstanding the various legislation in South Africa that deals with cybersecurity, what is intended is a co-ordinated dealing with the issues of cybersecurity that is aligned with international developments in this area. Interestingly, the Notice provides defintions of “Cyberspace” “Cybersecurity” and “Critical Information Infrastructure.”
